The North Coast 500 has become its own small industry. It is still worth doing, especially if you treat the suggested itinerary as a starting point rather than a script and add three days to it.
Our preferred version begins quietly inland, threads up to Durness, doubles back through Assynt — which is the part nobody quite prepares you for — and finishes through Torridon and Glen Affric.
Pack for four seasons in a day. Book the smaller inns ahead. Leave time, every afternoon, to pull over for no particular reason. The Highlands reward the unscheduled hour more than almost anywhere we have driven.
The Unknown Atlas is independent. We may earn a small commission on links to hotels, experiences, and travel essentials — how that works.
